R Brown & Son, Stenhousemuir
R Brown & Son have been an established butcher in Stenhousemuir for over 55 years
Their current butchers shop has been in the same busy and central position since 2007. Whilst the original refrigerated display equipment & internal fixtures had provided a sterling service for 18 years, these were all beginning to look jaded and in need of a refresh.
The main consideration for the refitted shop was to maintain an established product range with scope and space to offer diverse new butchery & bakery products to maintain existing customers and, also, attract additional footfall. With this in mind we proposed the following
- A new butchery & cooked meat serveover display counter running the length of the shop
- A separate matching new 4-tiered bakery display at the end of the counter
- Refurbishment of an existing multideck into a glass-door butchery display, recessed into the wall behind the counter
- Bespoke copper coloured, slate-effect and white tile-effect wall claddings all around the retail area
- A new fresh white colour suspended grid ceiling with LED lighting
- Lastly, a new fascia to replace the old yellowed cover on the existing (and perfectly functioning) air conditioning
The refurbishment process
From the outset the overall shop layout remained workable so there was no need to drastically alter the customer flow or equipment positioning.
The new butchery counter now runs the length of the shop with a new bakery/pie display at the rear to maximise the full potential of the available floor space, and we have also relocated the butchery wall display to the back of the shop for further visual impact.
A new monochrome colour scheme has been dramatically contrasted with copper-coloured wall cladding as a feature backdrop to the counter. Paired with a fresh new suspended ceiling and new flooring the whole retail shop area couples an inviting atmosphere with a contemporary dimension.
In terms of carrying out the refit there was no way to avoid closing the shop for the duration because it had to be stripped back to a bare shell. The customer bit the bullet and we meticulously implemented a 9-day programme starting on a Saturday afternoon after shop closure. Despite some unforeseen obstacles (typical of any refit project) we successfully handed back the finished shop to the customer on time, ready for a mid-week reopening as planned.

The Result
The revitalised shop has been an instant success with existing customers and has, equally importantly, attracted a whole new footfall of customers who might have otherwise walked past.
The new counter provides space to expand the range of fresh meat products and display them in a more efficient way. Meanwhile, the new 4-tier bakery and pie display offers merchandising flexibility that was simply not possible with the old shop layout.
We are delighted to have helped make such a difference.
